在通往后胡同的后屋门口，张老板听到了敲门声。他开了门又很快回去继续在许多箱新书中找沙漏。平时，他总会停下来欣赏新书的封面艺术，但是现在，他几乎注意不到任何封面。
走进来的是他的老朋友老李。
老李开玩笑地说：“卖书的张老板，你这儿谁都能进来吗？”
张老板低下头，不回答。他想隐藏自己的表情，不让老朋友看出来。他觉得丢面子，因为现在他感觉心烦意乱。
张老板想：不，我不是谁都让进来的。我害怕已经有人没经过我的同意就进来了。你和我，老朋友，现在这一刻，可能也呼吸了那个人呼吸过的空气。
张老板抬起头，想看看他的朋友。
张老板知道老李不可能知道刚才他把他伤得有多深。老李也不知道发生了什么。张老板又低下头，回去继续在许多箱新书中找沙漏。
原来张老板没隐藏好自己的感情。他的朋友老李似乎看出了他眼中受伤的神情，似乎觉得哪里不对，同时又很理解他。
张老板听到老李说：“我刚才在开玩笑，我们说点儿正事儿吧。
老朋友，好久不见，你身体怎么样？你在做什么？”
张老板抬起头说：“我在找我的沙漏。”
老李：“啊？怎么了？沙漏不见了吗？”
张老板：“是的，沙漏不见了。”
老李：“你把它放哪儿了？”
张老板：“如果我知道它放哪儿了，我就不会去找它了！”
老李：“冷静，冷静下来，别放在心上，只不过是一个沙漏。可以被替代。你买个新的就行了。”
张老板：“这可不只是一个沙漏，这是我妻子送给我的礼物。它无法被替代。”
老李：“你以前把沙漏放在你的柜子里。你找过柜子里吗？”
张老板：“当然，我找过了，你觉得我傻吗？沙漏不见了。”
老李：“哎，你到底放在哪儿了？”
张老板：“我已经告诉你了！如果我记得我放在哪儿了，我早就找到了！”
老李：“哎，你把它借给谁了吗？”
张老板：“我没有借给别人。我把它放在那儿。我一直把它放在那儿。”
张老板指着柜子说。
老李：“你是不是忘记你借给谁了？”
张老板：“你觉得我是个健忘的人吗？”
老李：“老朋友，不要误解我的意思。别把你的词放在我嘴里。我不是说你是个健忘的人，我是问你是不是忘记了。这不是一回事。”
张老板知道，自己开始着急了，很快就会对老李说出一些让自己后悔的话。他吸气，呼气，放松，放松。
张老板：“哎呀，好，好，好，我姓张还是姓李？我记得。”
老李：“哈哈哈，笑死我了，真逗。”
张老板：“好的，抱歉。但是，你听起来像个侦探一样。别再审问我了。这不是调查。”
老李：“别生我的气。需要我帮忙吗？”
