在后屋的会议室里，杨助理把注意力从陈太太转向胡同小吃窗口厨师小陈。桌子中间放着张老板的沙漏，是他妻子送给他的礼物。
杨助理说：“张老板的沙漏，在你的衣柜里被你妈妈陈太太找到了。是你拿的吗？”
小陈：“是的。是我拿了沙漏。”
杨助理：“你承认你拿了吗？”
小陈：“是的，我承认。我拿了。”
杨助理：“小陈，为什么？你为什么你要拿沙漏？”
小陈：“我这样做，是为他好。”
张老板倒吸了一口气。他想：为我好？这怎么可能？小陈在想什么？
树：大家都可以把注意力从东西上转向树。这是为大家好。
杨助理：“请你解释一下。”
小陈：“一晚上又一晚上，我给我妈妈做好吃的。一晚上又一晚上，她从来不会注意她吃的东西怎么样，仿佛她吃的东西就像白纸一样一点儿味道都没有。一晚上又一晚上，她一直在说张老板多么迷恋他的太太、女儿和那个沙漏。”
张老板坐着一动不动，愣了。他是什么意思？
杨助理：“继续说。”
小陈：“我妈妈相信张老板对树不够相信。妈妈相信张老板把太太和女儿放在树的前面。张老板的宝贝不能是沙漏，必须是树。”
张老板觉得脸都红了。现在张老板感到很羞愧，因为他觉得小陈羞辱他，小陈让他很羞愧，很没面子。这样仿佛有人告诉他，当他轻轻地摸妻子的脸、握住女儿的手、把沙漏放进柜子里时，虽然这些对他来说都很有价值，但是他的手上其实都是泥。
杨助理：“陈太太，是真的吗？”
陈太太： “让我解释一下，我 …… ”
杨助理打断：“请先回答这个问题。”
陈太太：“树是我们的宝贝。我是真正的树的信徒，我们都应该是树的信徒。”
突然，张老板又开始感觉到那个熟悉的感觉，惊恐地觉得自己像是停在了半空中一样。他又觉得自己好像在看一个电视剧，但是这一次，这不是别人的故事，而是他自己的人生故事，一个关于痛苦、失去和背叛的故事。
然后，张老板感觉自己重重地跌坐在他椅子上。背叛！陈太太背叛了所有反对树的会议成员。
