Illustrator

We are seeking illustrators with literacy in Simplified Chinese Characters to create illustrations for 枝丫, a serialized novel written for intermediate level readers of Simplified Chinese Characters.

枝丫 is published free, as a public service. Expenses are bankrolled by the author. You will join a small team of creators and consultants who work in synergy to attempt to create something beautiful and meaningful.

You are invited to imagine a dramatic moment in the chapter, the characters and scenes in the story as you envision them, and to create illustrations in your own unique, original style. We are not looking for a continuation of other illustrators’ styles. Realism is preferred over stylized forms, such as anime or manga.

You will be given access to the Google doc where we post final drafts. The novel is currently published weekly on Friday mornings (U.S. Eastern). We work approximately 5 chapters ahead. The novel is anticipated to be approximately 50 chapters.

To create art involves many factors, including think time, imagination time, and execution time. We respect all these factors. Since this is commissioned work for moderate compensation, please save your excellent effort for your own art and give this project good effort.

Your work product:

  • Is a standalone piece of visual art optimized for viewing on an electronic device.

  • Would be considered beautiful or beautifully rendered by most mainstream viewers.

  • Attempts to contribute to the personal meaning readers might take away from the chapter and the story as a whole.

  • Is an illustration that meets Substack's post image requirements optimally. (We are currently using a .jpg with horizontal 1456 x vertical 948).

  • Positions the bulk of the figures and objects in the center of the illustration and has no borders so the image can be viewed effectively without appearing cut off, regardless of device.

  • Is submitted at the rate of one illustration per week, due on Mondays by 3:00 AM U.S. Eastern. Based on the number of chapters we have finished, more than one illustration may be submitted at a time. Working ahead is prized.

Compensation

$75 per illustration via PayPal. The amount is based on an estimated 1.5 hours of think-imagine-execute time. (I wish I could, but I can never compensate you for the invaluable talent, skill, experience, and expertise you bring to the task.)

Credit

Artist receives credit by name, a link to their website, and listing on our About the creators page.

Changes

The per illustration fee includes up to 2 requests for small changes to clarify meaning. Of the first 19 images, over half were accepted without changes and the rest were accepted with one or two changes within limited areas of the illustration.

Rights

Purchaser asks for rights to use the image on multiple sites and to use images in print publications.

Dealbreakers

  • Inability to convey the chapter's theme via illustration.

  • Late submission of illustrations.

  • Not responding to emails within 48 hours.

  • Non-constructive criticism. Vision-informed, supportively-expressed suggestions are welcome.
